दिवसेनैव तत् कुर्याद् येन रात्रौ सुखं वसेत् |
यावज्जीवं च तत्कुर्याद् येन प्रेत्य सुखं वसेत् ||

दिन के माध्यम से ऐसा काम करो, ताकि आप रात में शांति से सो सकें। इसी तरह, अपने पूरे जीवन में ऐसा काम करें ताकि आप मौत के बाद शांतिपूर्वक जीवित रहें।

Do such a work through the day, so that you can sleep peacefully at night. Similarly, do such a work throughout your life so that you can 'live' peacefully after death.

आदौ माता गुरो: पत्नी ब्राा*मणी राजपत्निका |
धेनुर्धात्री तथा पॄथ्वी सप्तैता मातर: स्मॄत: ||

हमारी मां (यानी जन्म देने वाला कोई), गुरु (शिक्षक) की पत्नी, ब्राह्मण की पत्नी, राजा की पत्नी, गाय, भरण पोषन करनेवाली  और  पृथ्वी हमारी मां हैं।

Our own mother (i.e. one who gives birth), guru's (teacher's) wife, wife of a brahmin, wife of a king, cow, nurse and the earth are our mothers.

The word 'mother' indicates respect we have about somebody. Here, subhashitkar says that we have seven mothers i.e. we should have respect to all listed in the subhashita.

न उच्चार्थो विफलोऽपि दूषणपदं दूष्य:तु कामो लघु: ||

बड़ी सपने / लक्ष्य की विफलता में कोई गलती नहीं है। लेकिन व्यक्तिगत स्वार्थी लाभ के लिए सोचने के लिए यह बड़ी गलती है

There is no fault in the failure of the big dreams/aims. But it's big fault even to think for the personal selfish gains.

त्रिविधं नरकस्येदं द्वारम नाशनमात्मन: । काम: क्रोधस्तथा लोभस्तस्मादेतत्त्रयं त्यजेत् ॥

काम, क्रोध और लोभ-आत्मा को भ्रष्ट कर देने वाले नरक के तीन द्वार कहे गए हैं । इन तीनों का त्याग श्रेयस्कर है ।

કામ, ક્રોધ અને લોભ -  આત્મા ને ભ્રષ્ટ કરવાવાળા નરકના ત્રણ દ્વાર  કહ્યા છે. આ ત્રણેય નો ત્યાગ  જ શ્રેષ્ઠ છે .

परवाच्येषु निपुण: सर्वो भवति सर्वदा  l 

आत्मवाच्यं न जानीते जानन्नपि च मुह्मति ll 

हर कोई हमेशा दूसरे व्यक्ति के बारे में जानने (और बात करने) के बारे में विशेषज्ञ है। वह या तो अपनी गलतियों को नहीं जानता है या जानने के बाद भी वह इसके बारे में चुप रहता है।

Every one is always expert in finding out (and talking about) falts/shortcommings of another person. He either does not know his own faults or even after knowing he keeps quiet about it.

गौरवं प्राप्यते दानात् न तु वित्तस्य संचयात् |
स्थिति: उच्चै: पयोदानां पयोधीनां अध: स्थिति: ||

पैसे का दान करके ही गौरव प्राप्त किया जाता है न की धन का संचय करके, जैसे पानी देने वाले बादल ऊपर रहते है और सागर पानी लेने वाला निचे रहता है 

Fame is obtained by donating (giving) money, not collecting it. Clouds (givers of water) have a high position whereas the seas (reservoirs of water) have a low position.

जलबिन्दुनिपातेन क्रमश: पूर्यते घट: 

स हेतु: सर्वविद्यानां धर्मस्य च धनस्य च 

जैसे एक एक पानीकी बून्द से पूरा घड़ा भर जाता है उसी तरह ही धर्म और धन का संचय करना चाहिए 

If water is added to a vessel drop by drop, it gets filled slowly. Similarly, knowledge, dharma (punnya, virtuous deeds), and wealth are to be earned slowly. This subhashita says that don't ever miss to gain a small amount of knowledge, dharma or wealth, because any small amount actually adds in your treasure.

क्षमा शस्त्रं करे यस्य दुर्जन: किं करिष्यति |
अतॄणे पतितो वन्हि: स्वयमेवोपशाम्यति ||

जिसके हाथमे क्षमा जैसा हथियार हो उसका दुर्जन भला क्या उखाड़ सकता है। जहा घास न हो वहाँ अग्नि अपने आप ही शांत हो जाती है।  

What can a wicked person do to someone who has the weapon of fogivance in his hands ? Fire fallen on ground without any grass extinguishes by itself.

अधीत्य चतुरो वेदान् सर्वशास्त्राण्यनेकश: |
ब्रम्ह्मतत्वं न जानाति दर्वी सूपरसं यथा ||

सिर्फ चार वेदों और सभी शास्त्राओं की संख्या को पढ़ने के लिए, ब्राह्मण (सच्चाई का सच्चाई) के वास्तविक ज्ञान को प्राप्त करने के लिए पर्याप्त नहीं है, बस के रूप में सेवा करने के लिए इस्तेमाल किए गए किसी जहाज में एक चम्मच के रूप में, इसका स्वाद नहीं मिलता है चीज़ उस बर्तन से सेवा करती है (उच्चतम सिद्धांत की प्राप्ति के लिए, शास्त्रों को सुनना, उन पर ध्यान देना, और उनके लगातार अध्ययन, प्रतिबंधों को देखने आदि आवश्यक हैं।)

Mere reading of the four vedas and all the shastras number of times, is not enough for obtaining the real knowledge of Brahman (Realisation of the supreme being), Just as a spoon in a vessel used for serving, does not get the taste of the thing served from that pot. (For realisation of highest principle, listening the shastras, meditating on them, and their constant study, observing of the restrictions etc. are necessary.)

ऐक्यं बलं समाजस्य तदभावे स दुर्बल:

तस्मात ऐक्यं प्रशंसन्ति दॄढं राष्ट्र हितैषिण: ll

एकता किसी भी समाज की ताकत है और यह (समाज) एकता के बिना कमजोर है। इसीलिए राष्ट्र के कल्याणकों ने एकता की सराहना की।

Unity is the strength of any society and it (society) is weak without unity. Hence wellwishers of the nation strongly praise unity.

सेवक: स्वामिनं द्वेष्टि कॄपणं परुषाक्षरम् 

आत्मानं किं स न द्वेष्टि सेव्यासेव्यं न वेत्ति य: ll

एक नौकर अपने स्वामी से नफरत करता है अगर गुरु कष्ट और बात करने में कठोर हो। वह खुद से नफरत क्यों नहीं करता क्योंकि वह न्याय नहीं कर सकता जो सेवा करने के योग्य है और कौन नहीं है? आमतौर पर लोग अपने दुखों के लिए परिवेश को दोष देते हैं। कई बार मुसीबत का कारण स्वयं नहीं है और न ही उसका परिवेश

A servant hates his master if the master is miser and rough in talking. Why doesn't he hate himself as he can not judge who is worthy of serving and who is not? Normally people tend to blame the surroundings for their sufferings. Most of the times the cause of trouble is oneself and not his surroundings.

असभ्दि: शपथेनोक्तं जले लिखितमक्षरम् |
सभ्दिस्तु लीलया प्राोक्तं शिलालिखितमक्षरम् ||

दुष्ट व्यक्ति द्वारा की गई शपथ पानी पर लिखी गई बात  की तरह है (बहुत अस्थायी!)  इसके विपरीत, संतों द्वारा उल्लिखित अनौपचारिक शब्द भी चट्टानों पर लिखी हुई बात  की तरह हैं!

The oath taken by the wicked person are like the letters written on the water (So much temporary !). In contrast, even the informal words uttered by the saintly person are like the letters imprinted on rocks!

परिवर्तिनि संसारे मॄत: को वा न जायते |
स जातो येन जातेन याति वंश: समुन्न्तिम् ||

परिवर्तनशील इस संसारमें जन्म लेता है वह मरता भी है, लेकिन जीवित तो वही रहता है जिससे उसके कुलकी उन्नति होती है।  

In this ever-rotating wheel of birth and death, who that is dead, is not indeed born again? But he alone is (considered as) born by whose birth (his) family attains eminence.

साहित्यसंगीतकलाविहीन: साक्षात् पशु: पुच्छविषाणहीन: |
तॄणं न खादन्नपि जीवमान: तद्भागधेयं परमं पशूनाम् ||

वह जो कला से रहित है, साहित्यिक रचना और संगीतके ज्ञान से अज्ञात है वह  स्पष्ट रूप से पूंछ और सींग के बिना एक जानवर है।   वह घास खाए बिना ही रहता है वही  जानवरों का महान भाग्य है!

He who is devoid of the arts, of literary composition and music is evidently a beast without the tail and horns; That he lives without eating (feeding on) grass is the great good fortune of the beasts!

न प्रा)ष्यति सम्माने नापमाने च कुप्यति |
न क्रुद्ध: परूषं ब्रूयात् स वै साधूत्तम: स्मॄत: ||

उन्हें सबसे अच्छे संत के रूप में घोषित किया जाता है, जो सम्मानित होने पर अति प्रसन्न नहीं होता है, और अपमानित होने पर नाराज़ नहीं होता है और नाराज होने पर भी कठोर शब्द नहीं बोलता है।

He is declared as the best saint, who is not overjoyed when honored, and does not get angry when insulted and also does not speak harsh words when angry.
